On December 3,
Westlake Yacht Club (WYC) held its annual Holiday Party and collected
toys for tots. Each member brought a gift in support of a campaign by
the United States Marines to collect and distribute holiday gifts to
disadvantaged children. Two handsome members of "The Corps"
came ashore in full dress uniforms and secured the presents. They
were warmly greeted by WYC members who enjoyed hearing some exciting
stories. Showing the great courage for which Marines are legendary,
they accepted invitations to dance with patriotic WYC members Joan
Piccioni and Rosemarie Sabbagh.
On October 30,
ghosts, goblins and Ike Turner invaded Westlake Yacht Club and
partied away into the weird hours of the night.
Jan and Randy
DeMaio, our new Vice Commodore, came as Adam & Eve and won the
best couples costume award. Jan and Randy must have saved a lot on
fabric. Was that an apple she was feeding him? Penny Singer won the
award for best female costume in montage of Star Trek belles,
including Uhura and 7-of-9. Husband Mike, our new Commodore, came as
Captain Kirk. The best male costume award, and most outrageous
performance, belonged to normally mild-mannered Leif Jonassen. Leif
and Jan Jonassen came as Ike and Tina Turner, with Leif's face,
hands, and chest covered in black shoe polish. Yes it did wash off;
Leif recommends the liquid polish.
Jim Olsen came as
a terrifying samurai with Hope as his lovely geisha consort. Jan
Schiffmann appeared as Beetlejuice and Kathleen was dressed as a
Salem Witch. Debbie Rolin came as a beautiful witch. Some had trouble
telling which witch was which. Chris Rolin was a "sharply"
dressed swashbuckler. Tink Henderson made a very credible Fairy
Godmother, while Flip was Jack-in-the-Box. Larry Schalk arrived as
James Bond in tuxedo with Marla dressed as a martini glass, shaken
not stirred.
For terrified
guests requiring spiritual guidance, solace was provided by Fathers
Kash Chandani and Dennis Predmore and Sisters Kitty Chandani and
Chris Predmore. Those with more worldly desires were more interested
in the two hot French maids, Carol Kirschbaum and Marilyn Yerkey. Ray
Kirschbaum was well-suited as Hugh Hefner.
Guests received
masks, and fig leaves if necessary, as they arrived. The Club was
decorated with black lights, spider webs and a coffin containing
Dracula, a Staff Commodore too cheap to buy his own drinks. This
party was strictly BYOB - Bring Your Own Blood. Other refreshments
were liberally provided.
Forsaking the
traditional "eye of newt and toe of frog", guests feasted
on spicy penne pasta, beef sate with peanut sauce, meatballs, stuffed
chicken and salad.
The five piece
band "Monster Mash" kept the goblins hopping and rocking,
playing old favorites from Janis Joplin that were enough to wake the dead.
If you missed the
fun, fear not, there are five more big events at Westlake Yacht Club
coming in December!
