On January 7th,
Wilma Rosenberg was installed as Commodore of the Association of
Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs (ASMBYC). ASMBYC was founded in 1962 and
now has fifteen member and associate member yacht clubs. For those
without a nautical chart (maps are for freeways), Santa Monica Bay
stretches from Malibu to Redondo Beach.
Wilma lives in
Westlake Village and has been a member of Westlake Yacht Club (WYC)
for thirty years. She worked her way up the ranks, served as WYC
Commodore in 1998 and is now a Staff Commodore. Under Wilma's
enthusiastic command, WYC was selected as Senior Club of the Year for
1998 by the Southern California Yachting Association.
Giving the keynote
speech at Wilma's installation was Paul Artof, a past commodore of
both WYC and ASMBYC. Paul was in rare form after returning from
"drydock", and gave a great performance. He concluded with
a cell phone call from God, who conveyed through Paul His good wishes
and His confidence in Wilma. No doubt Paul will be getting quite a
long distance bill.
Also honored by
ASMBYC was WYC's Junior Commodore, 16-year old Sean Mula, who
received the Diane Armstrong award for outstanding junior sailor.
Sean lives in Westlake Village and is a sophomore at Westlake High
School. Sean is the lead skipper of WHS's intramural sailing team,
which is coached by Joe Sorosky of Agoura Hills and sponsored by WYC.
Sean is being considered for the prestigious ZISA training program at
the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, where world-class sailors from the
America's Cup races and the Olympic Games coach our future U.S.
champions. Sean is never far from blue water and white canvas.
Helping Wilma and
Sean celebrate were Wilma's daughter Michelle Rosenberg, a law school
graduate living in Westlake Village, and Sean's father Richard Mula,
an airport lighting systems engineer with Honeywell. Also joining in
the festivities and cheering for Wilma and Sean were WYC Commodore
Mike Singer and his wife Penny, Rear Commodore Robert Piccioni and
his wife Joan, Junior Staff Commodore Roger Weisman and his wife
Trudy, Treasurer Walt Jefford and his wife Georgia, Director Ann
Nelson, and Staff Commodores Paul and Sue Artof.
After seeing what
she did for WYC, we're sure that under Wilma, great things lie dead
ahead for ASMBYC. But if the ASMBYC folks think she's going to let
them coast, they'd better watch their sterns.

Piccioni, Rear Commodore |
