Yacht Club Celebrates Super Bowl and Sweethearts

Westlake Yacht Club members enjoyed a great Super Bowl party, watching the game on two giant-screen TV's with an abundance food and drink. Everyone forgot their diets with tray after tray of tri-tip, chicken, ribs and assorted libations, and highlighted at halftime by the annual Chili Cook Off. Connie Mercurio won first place among the twelve the chili entrants, followed closely by Joan Piccioni in second and Pat Adams in third. It was a good game and a great Nautical Fleet event, but one has to admit it was more of a guy thing.

So, next the weekend, Westlake Yacht Club's gentlemen tried to make it up to the ladies at the Club's annual Sweetheart's Ball, two days before Valentine's Day. Sixty-four club members and several guests enjoyed this elegant black-tie affair with the gentlemen in tuxedos and the ladies in stunning cocktail dresses. The evening was organized and hosted by Vice Commodore Randy DeMaio and Mrs. Vice, Jan.

Members were delighted to welcome Terry Pierce back from "dry dock". And sorry to bid "goodbye for now" to our 2001 Commodore Ray Colesworthy and wife Jean who are moving to Virginia, but will remain club members.

The clubhouse was decorated red and white floor-to-ceiling drapes, balloons, glitter and hearts in untold variety and quantity. Dining tables were decorated with heart-shaped mirrored-glass centerpieces with roses and balloons, and complemented by scattered crystal beads. Hats off to the dedicated decorating team of Jan DeMaio, Fifi Lippman, Rose Jeffery, Penny Singer, Joyce Pierce, and Joan and Robert Piccioni.

Hungry guests began with a tantalizing array of appetizers, including spare ribs, sauteed mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, peppers, and artichoke hearts. Dinner followed with a Caesar salad, red wine-braised beef shanks with mushrooms, chicken piccata, orzo with feta cheese, pine nuts and parsley basil mashed potatoes, and roasted vegetables. As if anyone needed more food, this was topped off by a bread pudding dessert with butter rum sauce.

Guests enjoyed a wide-ranging selection of dance music, including swing, twist, rock, a waltz, and several slow romantic numbers. The next day, "The Lady in Red" and "That Ol' Time Rock and Roll" was still ringing in my ears.

The dancing got more and more festive as the evening progressed, with groups of threes, fours and fives boogieing away with the couples on the dance floor.

The party was great! And, as always, the best part was sharing the fun with wonderful friends.
